Beginners Woodworking Series

The Basics of Craftsmanship: Key Advice on Every Aspect of Woodworking by Purdy Strother (Editor), Taunton Press, Rodney Crosby, Fine Woodworking Magazine (Editor)

This book is essentially a a collection of articles from Fine Woodworking magazine. The editors' choices of articles, for the most part, are excellent. Anyone who wants a complete, one-stop overview of woodworking basics will enjoy this volume. Topics covered include setting up a shop, materials, tools, techniques, projects, and finishes.

This is a comprehensive guide for those new to woodworking but for those without any woodworking experience. A significant amount of jargon is used and without explanation. Chapters inlcude shop set-up and maintenance, the basic tools and materials needed in every shop, fundamental techniques for building furniture, and information on finishes and finishing methods. An added bonus is the inclusion of a number of projects. Plenty of illustrations, color photographs and helpful diagrams throughou — thoroughly enjoyable and informative.

Reader's comments:

"My desire to get back into woodworking after many, many years has led me to purchase about a dozen different books on setting up shop, buying tools, woodworking techniques, etc. Now I wish I had found this book much sooner."

"As a beginning woodworker, I can't recommend this book enough. It covers just about everything to get you going - laying out a shop, table saws, hand tools, ideal tools to own, dovetail joints, finishes, the list goes on and on. I'm constantly referring back to it as questions pop up."
