This Old House
'This Old House' has achieved cult status since the series first aired in 1979. It all began as one-time, 13-part series on the Boston PBS station WGBH hosted by Bob Vila and it has now grown into one of the most popular and successful programs on PBS. Spin off series include 'Ask This Old House,' 'Inside This Old House' and 'The New Yankee Workshop' hosted by Norm Abram. Even re-runs are popular, shown under the banner 'This Old House Classics.'
Steve Thomas took over hosting duties after Vila's departure in 1989, remaining with the program until 2003. Kevin O'Connor is the current host. Before O'Connor joined the cast, he was a homeowner who appeared on 'Ask This Old House' having problems with wallpaper removal.
The current cast includes:
- Norm Abram (Master carpenter)
- Roger Cook (Landscape contractor)
- Kevin O'Connor (Host)
- Tom Silva (General contractor)
- Richard Trethewey (Plumbing and HVAC)
This venerable fanchise also includes a magazine, several books and DVDs focusing on the appreciation of craftsmanship and fine design, with the idea that the best value is derived from informed planning and the usage of premium materials and workmanship. All their publications provide detailed information and photography that provides an understanding of the equipment, materials and techniques needed to renovate a home, as well as how to communicate more effectively with architects, contractors, craftsmen, and designers.
