JET 708599K JSG-6DCK 6-Inch/12-Inch
1-1/2 Horsepower Open Stand Belt/Disc Sander

There is something to be said for a tool that takes a crew to unpack...Weighing in at 210 pounds, this is one impressive machine. And this isn't the usual OOBE (Out of Box Experience) we've come accustomed to in recent years with "some assembly required" tools. The quality of workmanship is excellent and the instructions are well written making assembly painless despite the large number of bolts used in the stand.

This combination The 6-by-48-inch belt/12-inch disk sander is a professional grade machine that's wired for 115v operation allowing it to fit easily into any shop setting.

Highlights and features

  • Disc operation is very quiet. It removes material easily and with little or no vibration.
  • Both the belt and disk sanders feature a pivoting cast-iron table with a miter slot. Both tables have positive stops at 45 and 90 degrees. Although the 'Stops' are not of the same caliber as the rest of the machining. You'll need to check the angles with a square when adjusting. We also found the the Locking knobs on the table are a bit wimpy for such a massive tool. It's not a style thing either – they are difficult to tighten.
  • The motor is rated at 1-1/2 horsepower and delivers plenty of power.
  • Tracking on the belt is easy with a fine degree of adjustment using dual thumb screws.
  • A single 4" dust collection port handles both the belt and the disc sides of the machine and it's remarkably effective. JET boasts the tool's ability to collect 95% of removed material – we can't argue the point.
  • The belt sander operates horizontally and vertically and can be locked at any angle in between and the belt guard is designed to allow the full usage of the 6" belt width and length. There is even a quick-release lever for belt removal.
  • The start button can be pad-locked – a good safety option.

All in all, a very impressive machine that is designed to keep your sanding time to a minimum. With a street price of around $1100 it's not for every shop, but if you do woodworking for a living, JET is offering stiff competition pricier models. Just remember this isn't something the UPS guy is gonna drop at your door. It gets shipped freight, you'll need a couple of helpers, and unless you want it to become a permenant fixture in one particular spot in your shop – get a mobile tool base.
